“Following on Readings in Training and Simulation: A 30-Year Perspective [print edition available from hfes.org], Dee Andrews and Scotty Craig have pulled together in this volume 54 articles from [the journals] Human Factors and the Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making that were published between 2000 and 2014 focusing on training and simulation. These articles cover various issues in training methods, training devices and simulators, cognitive and affective factors influencing training (including affect, emotion, and training; basic cognition: memory and perception, feedback, and multimedia learning and cognitive load), application areas (including aviation and military training, medical training, decision making, teamwork, and training and aging), and transfer of training. These topics alone highlight the intellectual breadth and depth of the areas of training and simulation. The articles that Andrews and Craig have assembled speak to the significant contributions made to this area in the last 15 years. . . .Assembling this work in one place showcases the contribution of the community; at the same time, the book provides students and practitioners with one-stop-shopping for the most recent science and practice in this area.†– From the Foreword by Nancy J. Cooke, Professor & Program Chair, Human-Systems Engineering, Arizona State University
About the Editors
Dee H. Andrews has been a training developer, researcher, and human factors psychologist since 1976. He finished his 34-year career with the Department of Defense as a Directorate Senior Scientist for Training with the 711th Human Performance Wing of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). Prior to that assignment he was the division technical adviser for the AFRL Warfighter Training Research Division. During his civil service career, Andrews worked for all four military services. He now is a training and human factors consultant and an adjunct professor fatfour universities. His PhD is in instructional systems from Florida State University. His research interests include live, virtual and constructive training; cyber security training; accelerated learning; and flight training.
Scotty D. Craig is an assistant professor in the Human-Systems Engineering Program within the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU). He is also the supervising faculty member for the ASU Cognitive-Based Applied Learning Technology Laboratory (www.cobaltlab.org). He received his PhD in experimental psychology with a specialization in cognitive psychology from the University of Memphis and served as a postdoctoral fellow with the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center at the University of Pittsburgh/Carnegie Melon University. His goal is to provide cutting-edge research at the intersection of human cognition, technology, and the learning sciences that provides solutions to real-world problems within education and training. His research interests encompass understanding the implementation of multimedia educational environments, including such features as emotions, dialog, interaction, and cognition.
